Reading your 2303

BIR's Certificate of Registration is the most useful page it gives you: it lists every return you file. Here's one, read part by part.

The paper on the wall

Carla finds a framed yellow certificate by the stockroom door: BIR's Certificate of Registration, Form 2303. She signed for it when Kuting Kitchen registered, and hasn't read it since.

It's the most useful page BIR gives you. Let's read it part by part.

02 / 09

Your proof of registration

The 2303 proves your business is registered. It has to be displayed where you do business, as its last line says, and marketplaces ask for a copy before they let you sell.

Older certificates look like this one. Newer ones may be laid out differently, but they carry the same parts.

03 / 09

TIN and branch code

The TIN is your business's tax number. It goes on every invoice and every return. The last digits are the branch code: all zeros means the head office. A second store or warehouse registered as a branch gets its own code.

04 / 09

Name, trade name and address

The registered name is the company's legal name; the trade name is the name you sell under, if different. Your invoices show these and the registered address exactly as written here.

Moved? Changed your shop name? Update your registration first.

05 / 09

Your RDO

The Revenue District Office (RDO) number tells you which BIR office handles your business. It's where your books and invoices are registered and where you go for any update. Most of this now happens online through ORUS.

Tax types: your checklist

This is the part that matters most. Every tax type listed means returns to file, on schedule, even in a month with no sales.

Kuting Kitchen's four: income tax, VAT, withholding on compensation (it pays two staff) and expanded withholding (it withholds 5% from its rent). Lesson 6.1 turns these into dates.

Line of business

What you sell, as a code from the Philippine Standard Industrial Classification (PSIC), the official list of industries kept by the Philippine Statistics Authority. Kuting Kitchen's is 4791, retail sale via mail order houses or via internet, the usual code for online sellers.

Look up yours in the PSA's PSIC list ↗. Selling something new on the side? It may need adding to your registration.

The reminders box

The small print at the bottom lists the returns for your tax types and when each is due. Its first line is the rule to remember: file "with or without operation", so a quarter with no sales still gets a return.

It also reminds you to register your books and your invoices, and to tell your RDO (Form 1905) if you move or close.

Rules change faster than certificates. If your 2303 is older and lists a monthly VAT return (2550M) or the ₱500 registration fee (0605), both are gone. Take the dates from the filing calendar.
